BELGIUM INCREASES MINIMUM SALARY LEVELS FOR TYPE B WORK PERMITS

December 8, 2011

Effective from 1 January 2012, Belgium has raised the minimum salary levels for Type “B” work permits for highly skilled or senior managerial non-EEA workers.

  • The minimum annual base salary for highly skilled foreign nationals will be increased from €36,604 to €37,721.
  • The minimum annual base salary for senior management or executive-level positions will increase from €61,071 to €62,934.

Once these new salary requirements have come into effect on 1 January, employers should review the salaries of existing foreign employees in Belgium to ensure that they are compliant with the new criteria, since the changes apply to all Type “B” permit holders and not merely new applications.

They should also check that any new hires meet the necessary salary levels.  Any new work permit applications or renewals of existing permits which fail to match these salary requirements will be instantly rejected.
