EGYPT: Local Registration Requirement Enforced

As of mid-July 2017, nationals of certain countries must now register with the immigration authorities within seven days of arrival in Egypt, or face fines.
The registration requirement for all foreign nationals is part of existing immigration law, but has only recently been enforced, and only for certain nationals.
Who is affected?
The registration requirement applies to holders of all categories of visas including business, tourist and work visas as well as residence permits.
Foreign nationals (including children) who are currently required to register include those from the following countries:
Afghanistan, Algeria, Azerbaijan, Bosnia- Herzegovina, Burundi, Chad, DR Congo, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Ghana, India, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Kazakhstan, Kirgizstan, Lebanon, Libya, Nigeria, Pakistan, Palestine, Philippines, Rwanda, Somalia, Sri Lanka, Syria, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Trinidad and Tobago, Tunisia, Uzbekistan, Yemen.
Note that the list of nationalities requiring registration is fluid and it is recommended that the registration requirement is checked on a case by case basis for any upcoming travel to Egypt.
Registration Procedure
Affected nationals should register within seven days of arrival in Egypt.
Registration may be completed in person at an immigration office (or police station containing an immigration department desk) in the area where the foreign national is staying, or completed through an immigration agent acting under a Power of Attorney signed by the foreign national.
When registering, foreign nationals should present the original passport used for their initial entry into Egypt, which will be endorsed with a stamp.
Failure to comply with registration requirements may result in problems departing Egypt, inability to obtain residency visa endorsement and monetary fines ranging from EGP 350 to EGP 1500 (about USD 20 to USD 80).
Our advice
Foreign nationals already in Egypt who have not registered with the local immigration authorities are encouraged to reach out to an immigration specialist to determine if registration would now be advisable. The requirement to register should be checked for any upcoming travel to Egypt.
