UK: Changes to British Citizenship Applications for EEA Nationals

November 6, 2015

Currently, EEA nationals with permanent residence in the UK do not need to apply for proof of their permanent residence before applying for their application for British citizenship.

However, this will change from the 12th November 2015. All EEA nationals applying for British Citizenship must be able to produce a document that confirms permanent residency in the UK.

This means that applying for a document certifying permanent residence will become a necessary requirement for any EEA national wishing to apply for British nationality. Applications for permanent residence documents are currently taking up to six months to be processed by UKVI. Therefore, it is important that all EEA nationals who are considering British Citizenship take this into consideration.
