Immigration Summary

Temporary Residence is for work activities in Uruguay that will last at least six months, is approved for two years and can be renewed for another two years. The applicant may have a contract either directly with the Uruguayan entity or may remain on contract outside Uruguay.

Permanent Residence can be applied for post-arrival in Uruguay on visitor status, is usually issued within 12 months and is granted indefinitely.

The Provisional Identity Sheet (Hoja Provisoria de Identidad) is suitable for local hires who will be in Uruguay for up to six months. After this time, the applicant will be required to leave the country or, if needing to stay for longer, must apply for temporary or permanent residence.

Nationals of a member or an associate member country of MERCOSUR (Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname and Venezuela) can apply for permanent residence valid for three years.
