MEXICO – New regulation for family unit immigration processes.

The National Immigration Institute announced a new regulation for family unit immigration processes, which have been in force since March 14, 2025. The regulation includes the following changes:

  • Change of condition via family ties (having a Mexican son or daughter): The minor’s passport must be presented. Pediatric certificates will no longer be accepted.
  • Change of condition via family ties (having a Mexican spouse): Both spouses must have a personal interview at the National Immigration Institute.
  • Renewal via family ties, for a spouse: The marriage certificate must be submitted, duly apostilled or legalized and translated into Spanish by an accredited expert, even if it was presented at the initial process. Both spouses must have a personal interview at the National Immigration Institute.
  • Renewal via family ties, for minors: The birth certificate must be submitted, duly apostilled or legalized and translated into Spanish by an accredited expert, even if it was presented at the initial process.

In each of the above processes, certificates will be validated with the corresponding authority. For this reason these procedures will not be resolved on the same day.
