Geneva, Switzerland

Switzerland is introducing new measures to improve labor market access for both beneficiaries of protection status S and internationally trained talent. On May 27, 2026, the Federal Council adopted proposed amendments to the Federal Act on Foreign Nationals and Integration to strengthen workforce integration and help address labor shortages.

Implications of these new measures for beneficiaries of protection status S are:

  • Mandatory registration with public employment services for unemployed beneficiaries
  • Easier canton changes for employed individuals meeting certain work and financial conditions

There are also implications for internationally trained talent:

  • Simplified access to the labor market for third-country nationals who completed higher vocational training or a postdoctoral program in Switzerland
  • A new 6-month period to remain in Switzerland and search for employment after graduation

Until now, these post-graduation measures mainly applied to graduates of Swiss universities. The reform would extend similar opportunities to people completing higher vocational education in Switzerland as well. The move represents a strong signal for talent retention and workforce integration in Switzerland.
