The Swiss Federal Council has launched a consultation on the future of Protection Status S for people displaced from Ukraine. Given the ongoing conflict and the absence of a foreseeable lasting ceasefire, the government is considering extending Status S beyond March 2027.
The consultation involves cantons, municipalities, social partners, and other stakeholders and will assess several possible scenarios, including maintaining the current protection framework, phasing it out, or ending it if conditions in Ukraine change significantly. The Federal Council is also consulting on a possible future restriction regarding Ukrainian men liable for military service, while continuing to coordinate closely with developments at the EU level.
In addition, the Federal Council plans to give cantons greater flexibility in getting social assistance for people with Status S from March 2027, following upcoming changes to federal funding arrangements.
The consultation process is now underway, and the Federal Council is expected to make decisions on the future of Status S and any related regulatory changes by the end of summer 2026.
