The Federal Council has confirmed that Protection Status S for people who have fled Ukraine will remain in place until March 4, 2028. The associated integration measures will also continue, including federal funding to support cantonal efforts in language learning, education and access to the labour market.

From August 20, 2026, however, new eligibility rules will apply to future applicants. In line with recent measures adopted by the European Union, Protection Status S will only be granted to individuals who are complying with any military obligations they may have in Ukraine. This change applies solely to new applications and does not affect individuals who have already been granted Protection Status S.

Another important milestone is approaching in March 2027, when the first beneficiaries of Protection Status S will reach five years of residence in Switzerland. Under the Asylum Act, they will become eligible for a B residence permit linked to Protection Status S, providing a different residence status while the protection regime remains in force. In addition, individuals meeting the relevant legal requirements may continue to apply for a residence permit under Switzerland’s hardship provisions.
