Switzerland and the United Kingdom have agreed to extend their Services Mobility Agreement (SMA) until December 31, 2029, ensuring continued facilitated access for service providers between the two countries. Originally introduced after the end of free movement following Brexit in 2021, the SMA allows Swiss and UK companies to temporarily send professionals—such as consultants, IT experts, and engineers—to deliver services across borders. Under the agreement, UK providers can continue to work in Switzerland for up to 90 days per calendar year through a simplified online notification procedure, used by around 3,500 UK professionals in 2024. Swiss service providers also benefit from preferential market access in over 30 sectors in the UK, with additional advantages linked to the recognition of Swiss higher vocational qualifications, established under a complementary agreement in force since March 2025.
The Swiss Federal Council approved the four-year extension on October 15, 2025, following a consultation confirming that the SMA meets the needs of the Swiss economy and functions effectively. While this extension takes effect on December 1, 2025, the SMA remains a temporary arrangement, pending the modernization of the Switzerland–UK free trade agreement, which is expected to provide a long-term framework for cross-border service provision.
In summary, it means that UK companies can continue sending employees to Switzerland using the online notification tool (through Easygov) until at least December 31, 2029. When doing so, UK companies must comply with Switzerland’s accompanying measures, which include requirements on local wage levels, coverage of assignment allowances, and working conditions designed to protect the Swiss labor market.
