UNITED KINGDOM – The UK ETA scheme is now fully operational.

The UKVI has now finalized the introduction of the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) scheme. The ETA scheme applies worldwide for visitors to the UK who do not currently need a visa for short stays, or who do not already have a UK immigration status prior to travelling.

An ETA is a digital permission to travel which authorizes a person to travel to the UK. It is not a visa and does not in itself permit entry into the UK.

The introduction of the ETA is in line with the approach many other countries have taken to border security, including the United States and Australia, and helps prevent the arrival of those who may present a threat to the UK.

Who needs a UK ETA?

Every individual visiting the UK who does not need a visa for stays of less than six months and who does not meet one of the below exemptions needs to apply for an ETA to enter the UK.

Exemptions include:

  • UK or Irish nationals.
  • Individuals who hold a UK entry visa or residence permit.
  • Individuals who hold an Irish permit and do not need a visa to enter the UK.
  • Non-UK nationals who need an issued visa to enter the UK.

The ETA process was introduced to nationals in three phases, and since March 5, 2025, all eligible nationals, including EU nationals, can apply for an ETA.
