Copenhagen, Denmark

This exemption is a welcome development, as existing Danish work permit options have historically been limited in accommodating short-term, temporary conference-related work. The new framework provides greater flexibility for international event teams while maintaining regulatory oversight.

Danish authorities have introduced a new work permit exemption for certain conference activities. Under this exemption, eligible travellers may undertake work at conferences in Denmark for up to 10 working days as business visitors, without requiring a work permit. The change follows various compliance enforcement actions, including one such action at a conference in Denmark in May 2023, during which several UK nationals were detained for undertaking conference-related work without the appropriate authorisation.

To qualify for the exemption, individuals must meet the following eligibility requirements:

  • The individual must be employed as part of an international event team
  • The individual must have sufficient Schengen allowance
  • The foreign employer must be the host of, or a supplier to, the event
  • The event must be an international, closed indoor function, such as a trade fair, conference or company event
  • The event must be large-scale, with at least 400 registered or invited participants
  • The individual must not be performing work in the capacity of:
    • Security staff
    • Cleaning staff
    • Waiting staff
    • Drivers
  • A notification to the Register of Foreign Service Providers (RUT) must be submitted
