Temporary Residence (Residencia Temporaria), valid for one year and renewable up to six years, is applicable to local hires. The applicant must have an employment contract directly with the Paraguayan entity. Proof of income must be provided for the residence application.
Provisional Residence (Residencia Precaria) is for applicants who will be in Paraguay for a period of up to six months (renewable for another six months) but remain on home contract and payroll.
Permanent Residence (Residencia Permanente), valid indefinitely, is the only immigration process which enables the employee to act as a legal representative on behalf of the company. The applicant must have an employment contract directly with the Paraguayan entity. Proof of income must be provided for the residence application.
Nationals of Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Uruguay can apply for MERCOSUR Temporary Residence for up to two years. If the applicant wishes to stay for longer than this, he/she must apply for a change of status to permanent residence within 90 days of the expiration of the MERCOSUR temporary residence. The applicant may have a contract either directly with the Paraguayan entity or may remain on contract outside Paraguay, and does not need a sponsoring entity. The application is less document intensive than the standard temporary residence process.
For all these processes, the application can apply from inside Paraguay, but can only start working after having obtained the corresponding residence document.
