NEW ZEALAND – AEWV exemptions will address labor needs in key sectors from September 2024.

September 20, 2024

Certain roles within specific sectors of the New Zealand economy are now exempt from the AEWV (Accredited Employer Work Visa) minimum skill requirements. This change took effect on September 8, 2024.

For meat and seafood processing, new visa applicants for positions within the 2024/25 cap are eligible.

In tourism and hospitality, current visa holders can apply for an additional one-year AEWV if their current visa expires by March 31, 2025, provided they remain in the same role and meet the conditions, including not having to meet the February 2023 median wage rate.

Additionally, existing visa holders in the care sector, whose visas were issued between July 4, 2022, and November 23, 2023, and who were paid at least NZD 26.16 per hour, can apply for a one-year AEWV extension for the same occupation.

These adjustments aim to address specific sectoral needs and streamline the visa process for critical roles. By exempting certain positions from new skill and wage requirements, the government seeks to support industries facing labor shortages while ensuring that the AEWV remains effective.
