NORTH MACEDONIA – New Passports Required

July 28, 2023

Following the adoption of the Prespa Agreement in February 2019, which resulted in the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) being renamed the Republic of North Macedonia, a transition period for the re-issuance of official personal documents, including passports, was implemented. This transition period is due to end on 12 February 2024.

North Macedonian nationals will be required to obtain new passports issued under the name of the Republic of North Macedonia before the deadline. Passports bearing the FYROM name will no longer be valid following 12 February 2024.

Immigration Insights

When a North Macedonian national has a visa to travel to or a permit to work and/or reside in another country, the change in personal documents may lead to additional processes, such as submitting a notification, transferring the permit to the new passport or obtaining a new visa. We recommend ensuring all documents are renewed before the deadline.
