The Swiss Federal Council is easing employment access for holders of S permits. From December 1, 2025, S permit holders will no longer need a work authorization. Under the new system, they can simply notify authorities when taking up a job, changing employer, or ending an employment. Notifications can be made via the EasyGov portal or directly to cantonal authorities from October 23, 2025.
The change is aimed at reducing administrative burdens on employers and promoting professional integration. Beneficiaries of social assistance may also be required to participate in integration or reintegration programs or risk cuts to their benefits. The Federal Council also decided to allow extensions of federal-cantonal integration program agreements to reduce administrative load.
These changes require amendments to the Ordinance on Admission, Stay and Employment, and the Ordinance on the Integration of Foreigners.
In a separate development, asylum seekers, provisionally admitted persons, and individuals under protection status in Switzerland will, in principle, no longer be allowed to travel to their country of origin, transit countries, or other foreign states. The State Secretariat for Migration (SEM) will only authorize such travel in exceptional cases, in line with Parliament’s directive. This travel restriction does not apply to individuals holding status S protection.
