THAILAND – A new electronic travel authorization will be required for entry.
October 31, 2024
By: Patricia Clarino
Thai authorities have announced that a new electronic travel authorization (ETA) will soon be mandatory for all individuals entering Thailand by air, land, or sea. The ETA is expected to take effect between December 2024 and the first quarter of 2025, though official guidelines have yet to be released.
This new entry procedure will require a) visa exempt/visa waiver nationals, and b) visa-on-arrival-eligible nationalities to apply for an ETA prior to arrival in Thailand.
We anticipate that applications will be submitted via Thailand’s E-Visa portal and approvals will be issued within 24 hours of filing. A separate ETA application will be required for each entry, and registration will be free of charge. Travelers with an approved ETA will be able to utilize automated immigration gates by scanning a QR code.
Although comprehensive details are still pending, travelers should prepare to provide a valid passport, proof of temporary stay in the country such as return tickets, temporary accommodation, and evidence of sufficient funds. Additional information on potential health insurance requirements and restrictions on entries have not yet been clarified by the authorities. We will continue to monitor any developments concerning this new ETA requirement in Thailand.
