Effective September 21, 2026, the National Immigration Administration (NIA) expanded online accommodation registration nationwide across China. Foreigners staying in non-hotel accommodations (private residences, leased apartments, etc.) can now complete the mandatory 24-hour registration entirely online, eliminating the need to visit local public security bureaus in person.

Statutory Basis
Exit and Entry Administration Law, Art. 39 — registration is required within 24 hours of arrival at non-hotel accommodations.
Filing Channels
NIA Government Service Platform (s.nia.gov.cn); “NIA 12367” App, WeChat Mini Program, or Alipay Mini Program.
Who May File
Either the foreign national or the host (PRC citizen or foreigner). First-time registration at a given address must be completed with the host’s assistance.
Self-Filing Permitted
- Re-registering at the same address after prior successful filing
- Residing in self-owned property
No Re-registration Required
Returning to a self-owned residence after travel; or returning to a registered habitual residence within the same residence permit validity period.
Legal Validity
Online registration has the same legal effect as in-person filing.
Non-Compliance Penalty
Warning and/or administrative fine under Art. 76 of the Exit and Entry Administration Law.
Practical Takeaways
For new arrivals: Coordinate with your host to complete the initial registration via the NIA platform within 24 hours. Retain the digital confirmation as proof of compliance.
For long-term residents: If you hold a valid residence permit and return to your registered habitual residence after travel, no re-registration is necessary. However, if your passport number has changed, you will need to obtain an updated accommodation registration form.
