Immigration Summary

A Work Permit is the standard immigration process for applicants working in Algeria. Note that a local employment contract is required and the host entity in Algeria should be registered to receive foreign workers and have a Global Agreement in Principle (Demande d'Accord de Principe) in place. The applicant must be a minimum of 28 and a maximum of 60 years of age.

Work and residence permits are issued for the length of the principal applicant's assignment/employment duration and at the discretion of the authorities. The permits are renewable without restriction and a long term residence card valid for ten years (and also renewable) may be granted following seven years of residence in Algeria

Although the law provides for a short-term work permit category for under 90 days, in practice the timing, process steps and requirements to the point of legally working are the same as for the standard work permit and there are few benefits to the temporary option.

Alternatively, in exceptional circumstances and with approval from the Algerian labour authorities, it may be possible for a foreign national to perform short-term work activities while holding a business visa. The Algerian authorities will base their decision for this rare route on the applicant's proposed place of work, the nature of the project, and his/her planned duration of stay.
