Immigration Summary
A standard work permit is required for any work activities in Bahrain. Note that all applicants will need to sign a local employment contract with the sponsoring entity. The work permit is issued for up to two years and is renewable.
The entity in Bahrain that will sponsor the applicant must apply to the Labour Market Regulatory Authority and the application will go through the Directorate of Nationality, Passports and Residence Affairs in order to verify that there are no pending criminal investigations regarding the applicant and no security objections to their work permit application.
‘Bahrainisation’ requirements set out rules regarding the number of local employees that should be in place for companies who hire ten or more expatriates, depending on the sector. Work permit slots will be granted based on these rules.
Nationals of fellow members of the Gulf Co-operation Council except Qatar (United Arab Emirates, Oman and Saudi Arabia) wishing to work in Bahrain will not need to apply for a work permit or visa. They will just need to complete GCC Registration with the Social Insurance Organization and activate their ID card. Bahrain cut diplomatic ties with Qatar and closed borders as of 5 June 2017.
