PORTUGAL – Residence permits extended until October 15, 2025.
July 1, 2025
By: Carlijn Langeveld, Senior Manager, Newland Chase Advisory
While the extension of the permits will be automatically recognized by the authorities in Portugal, this extension only applies within Portugal itself, and other Schengen countries will likely not recognize the new expiration date. We therefore recommend not using an expired Portuguese residence card as the basis for travel to other Schengen countries.
In response to extensive delays in processing, the Portuguese authorities have been implementing several Decree-Laws since 2023 that automatically extended the validity of residence permits. The latest one extended the validity of certain permits and visas until June 30, 2025 (see also our previous alerts from February 10, 2023, January 4, 2024 and July 5, 2024).
Since these delays persist at the Agency for Integration, Migration, and Asylum (AIMA), a new Decree-Law No. 85-B/2025 was published on June 30, 2025 (effective July 1, 2025), extending the validity of any residence permits that initially expired between February 22, 2020 and June 30, 2025. Such permits will be considered valid and fully recognized by all Portuguese authorities until October 15, 2025.
Renewal applications for permits initially expiring before June 30, 2025 should be filed before this new expiry date. After this date, documents will continue to be recognized as valid for a period of 180 days from date of issuance of a proof of renewal payment issued by AIMA, I.P. The authorities have yet to publicly announce the renewal procedures to be followed, which may involve the Task Force for the Recovery of Pending Processes.
