PORTUGAL – Residence Permits Extended until 31 December 2023

February 10, 2023

In response to extensive delays in obtaining appointments at the Immigration Offices in Portugal, the SEF, the Portuguese government have issued and implemented Decree 90/2022 from 1 January 2023.

The Decree grants an automatic extension of Portuguese residence permits due to expire in 2023 and the holder resides in Portugal. The permits will be extended to 31 December 2023. However, residence permit holders in Portugal should continue to prepare and attempt to book appointments prior to the expiry date of their current permits.

The Portuguese authorities are working on the backlog of applications, and it is anticipated that the period between the residence permit expiry dates and the issuance of new residence permits should be no more than a few months.

Whilst the Portuguese authorities will recognize the automatic extension, the residence cards will continue to have an expired validity date. This could mean if the residence permit holder normally utilizes their Portuguese residence permit to facilitate travel within the Schengen area, they may want to obtain a Schengen visa as other Schengen countries may not recognize the automatic extension granted by Portugal.
