The U.S. Department of State (DOS) has directed every U.S. embassy and consulate to pause immigrant visa interviews globally while consular officers complete new training tied to expanded public charge screening. No end date has been announced. Applicants with scheduled interviews are being told they’ll be rescheduled, with new dates to follow.
What it is: An operational pause timed ahead of the public charge rule changes hitting I-485 filings on September 18.
What it isn’t: A nonimmigrant visa issue. H-1B, L-1, F-1, J-1, and B1/B2 processing are not impacted. This does not affect the adjustment of status with USCIS from within the U.S.
What is still unconfirmed: How long training takes, whether every post is affected equally, how the interview backlog gets worked down once it lifts and whether this will have any impact on other visa processes. Newland Chase will update as DOS issues formal guidance, not before.
