MALAYSIA: MDEC Removed Option for Endorsement Transfer

January 13, 2023

From 15 January 2023, the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) has removed the option for pass endorsements to be filed directly with MDEC for any foreign nationals who renewed their passports and intend to transfer the existing pass onto the new one.

Transfer of endorsement from the old passport to the new passport can either be done by:

  • Submission of the request via the sponsoring company’s eXpats portal followed by the physical submission of old and new passports for endorsement of the pass onto the new passport. This route takes about two weeks to complete.
  • Physical submission of old and new passports for endorsement of pass onto the new passport directly at Unit Immigration in MDEC, which can be done in about two working days.

Given the above changes, foreign employees working for MDEC registered companies must ensure they notify their employers regarding their renewed passport as soon as possible in order for the transfer of endorsement process to be initiated promptly. Otherwise, the foreign employee will be unable to travel out of Malaysia or submit any new or renewal applications until the transfer endorsement process has been finalized.
