NETHERLANDS: EU, EEA, and Swiss nationals exempt from IND registration

The Immigratie- en Naturalisatiedienst (IND) has announced that from the 6th of January 2014, European Union (EU), European Economic Area (EEA), and Swiss nationals will no longer be required to register with the IND in order to reside and work in the Netherlands.
Consequently, any EU, EEA, or Swiss national will be able to forgo having to have their passport endorsed with an IND residence label in order to evidence their IND registration. Simply possessing a valid EU, EEA, or Swiss form of national identification, such as a passport or ID card, will now serve as sufficient evidence of an individual”s right to reside and work in the Netherlands.
Nevertheless, all foreign nationals will still be required to register with their local municipality within 5 days of their arrival if they will be resident in the Netherlands for more than 4 months.
Notably, the new exemption now also includes post-2007 EU nationals from Romania, Bulgaria and Croatia. However, while Romanian and Bulgarian nationals can now enjoy free access to the Dutch labour market, Croatian nationals will still face work restrictions until the 1st of July 2015. Naturally, IND registration will continue to be mandatory for all non-EU, EEA, and Swiss nationals.
