ETIAS – Officially Delayed Until 2025
October 20, 2023
The European Union officially announced the launch of ETIAS – the European Travel Information and Authorization System – will be pushed back until at least May 2025.
Reports of a delay were widely reported last month, but this marks the first official confirmation of the new date. The ETIAS rollout has been plagued by delays, with the system originally planned to go into effect in 2021. ETIAS is not a visa, but rather a pre-travel authorization for citizens of the approximately 60 countries who enjoy visa-waivers with the EU. The system is touted as providing an additional level of security for the EU.
The most recent delay seems to stem from the electronic Entry/Exit system which will go into place at all entry points into the EU. This system will allow for the tracking and validating of passports presented at a port-of-entry and will replace manual entry stamps in passports. The Entry/Exit system is slated for an autumn 2024 launch.

We will continue to monitor developments around ETIAS, but travelers should not plan on needing an ETIAS authorization for European travel before May 2025.
