UNITED KINGDOM – New automated conversion process for EUSS decisions.
January 23, 2025
By: Sachini Gamage, Immigration Consultant, Newland Chase
On January 17, 2025, the UK Home Office introduced a new process to automatically convert eligible pre-settled status holders to settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme (EUSS). This process seeks to streamline the process of acquiring settled status.
Previously, pre-settled status holders were required to make an application for settled status, upon completion of five years of continuous residency in the UK and meeting all other eligibility requirements.
Details of the automated EUSS process.
The new process will involve automatic checks made against government-held information to verify continuous residence in the UK and eligibility for settled status. The first grants of automatic settled status are expected to take place from late January 2025.
Individuals who are approaching the expiry of their pre-settled status will be emailed by the Home Office to inform them they will be considered for settled status, removing the need to submit a separate application. In this scenario, no action needs to be taken by individuals.
In the event the Home Office is unable to automatically convert the status to settled status—if, for example, continuous residency requirements are not met—individuals will be informed directly by the Home Office.
The introduction of this process does not replace the submission of a manual application for settled status. As such, you do not need to wait for the automatic conversion to settled status if you are already eligible.
The automated system will be implemented in phases with plans for expansion later in 2025. Further information is yet to be published.
