Annual Tier 2 limit announced by the UKBA

April 18, 2012

As part of the wide-ranging changes to the Immigration Rules which came into force on the 6th April 2012, the UK Border Agency released a statement confirming the annual limit for Tier 2 and additional guidance relating to Tier 2.

The Migration Advisory Committee was asked to advise on the 2012-13 annual limit for Tier 2, and in accordance with their findings the Government has announced that:

  • The Tier 2 (General) limit will remain at its current level of 20,700 for the next 2 years until April 2014.

  • The skill level required by migrants who wish to work in the UK will increase.  32 occupations will consequently be removed from the shortage list and will therefore no longer be eligible for entry clearance.  These include roles such as office and security managers, IT technicians, business professionals and marketing associate professionals.

  • The rules which govern how companies should advertise highly paid and PhD jobs will be relaxed.  Businesses will no longer have to advertise such vacancies through the JobCentrePlus, but will still have to advertise more widely.  Additionally, companies may now select the best candidate for PhD level occupations, even if they require Tier 2 sponsorship.
