BREXIT: UK and Ireland Sign Deal to Guarantee Common Travel Area Rights
May 9, 2019
On 8 May 2019, the governments of Ireland and of the United Kingdom signed a Memorandum of Understanding reaffirming the status, rights and privileges already enjoyed by British and Irish citizens in each others’ states under the Common Travel Area (CTA).
The CTA is a long-standing arrangement between the UK, Ireland and the Crown Dependencies (Bailiwick of Jersey, Bailiwick of Guernsey, Isle of Man) which predates and is independent of Irish and UK membership of the EU. It provides for mutual free movement of people, voting rights and access to social security, health and education.
Our Advice
Neither Irish citizens in the UK nor British citizens in Ireland are required to take any action to protect their status and rights associated with the CTA.
