CANADA: New Concession for Foreign Students

October 12, 2022

In recognition of the economic challenges faced by employers, the Canadian government has announced the temporary lifting of the 20-hour-per-week cap on the number of hours that eligible post-secondary students are allowed to work off-campus while class is in session.

Newland Chase Insights

Most post-secondary international students are allowed to work on and/or off campus, with their authorization to work printed directly on their study permit. Starting November 15, 2022, and until December 31, 2023, international students who are in Canada and who have off-campus work authorization on their study permit, are no longer restricted to 20-hour-per-week rule during school sessions.

In addition, the Canadian government is launching a pilot project to automate the processing of study permit extensions which consistently have a high approval rate. The pilot will involve a small group of applicants who could see their extended study permit processed much faster, with the goal of improving client service.  The aim of this pilot is to test the feasibility of extending automated processing to other appropriate categories to help reduce processing times in the future.  Newland Chase will continue to monitor these developments and will provide updates as they become available.
