Immigration Summary

A work permit is the standard immigration process for qualified employees to conduct temporary work in Jamaica. It is Initially granted for any period between three months and three years. The applicant must be a skilled worker and possess experience, qualification and or skills which are not available in the Jamaican labour market. Although it may be possible for assignees on home contract to work in Jamaica, Jamaican law does not contain specific details for applications on this basis; the immigration process is intended for local hires.

Applicants visiting Jamaica for certain limited purposes and within certain limited time periods may be able to obtain a work permit exemption. The exemption applies to "persons who visit Jamaica to inspect the plant, machinery or equipment of any factory or other industrial works, or to give technical advice on the operation of any undertaking, business or enterprise of whatever kind that is based in Jamaica". Restrictions apply on the time period that can be spent in Jamaica under the exemption.
