MEXICO: Delays at Immigration Offices
February 5, 2019
As the new federal administration takes office in Mexico, major staff changes are taking place within the offices of the National Immigration institute (INM) around the country, affecting the processing times of submitted applications.
These processing delays are exacerbated by the restructuring of the INM to focus on the protection of human rights and the processing of asylum applications at Mexico’s south-eastern border, as large groups of Central American migrants transit Mexico from south to north. INM resources and staff have been mobilised to the region to process more than 10,000 applications for visitor visas for humanitarian purposes, allowing a temporary right to work for asylum seekers.
Changes to immigration requirements and procedures are expected to be officially announced in the near future, but may have been unofficially implemented in some regions.
Our Advice
Employers are advised to update their corporate registration certificate with the INM as soon as their annual tax return for 2018 is ready. Corporate registration is required for sponsoring work visa applications, and the INM typically accepts valid certificates throughout April, in line with the end-of-March deadline to submit the annual tax return.
