JAPAN – Introduction of pre-entry tuberculosis screening of certain nationalities.
January 21, 2025
By: Patricia Clarino, Senior Manager, Newland Chase Advisory.
Starting in June 2025, tuberculosis screening test results will be required for Certificate of Eligibility (COE) applicants from the Philippines, Nepal, and Vietnam who are seeking long-term work or residence permits in Japan.
The requirement will come into force for eligible applications filed from the following dates:
- Philippines and Nepal nationals: June 23, 2025
- Vietnamese nationals: September 1, 2025
An applicant can be exempted from this requirement if they have proof that their current residential address is not in any of the affected countries. If a screening test is required, it should be conducted at a designated medical institution.
This new requirement is not applicable to short-term visitors staying in Japan for less than 90 days nor to a visitor who re-enters Japan with valid re-entry permission, regardless of nationality.
For more information, please visit this Japanese government website. (Note that it is currently available only in the Japanese language.)
