MALAYSIA: ePass Introduced for Renewals

November 17, 2022

Beginning on 01 December 2022, renewals filed by applicants whose companies are registered with the Expatriate Services Division (ESD) can now be granted an electronic pass (ePass). The endorsement sticker usually affixed to the foreign national’s passport showing the renewed pass status will now be replaced by the ePass. This change will be applicable to all employment pass (EP) renewals and pass renewals for any of their dependents.

The change will not apply in the following scenarios:

  • For new EP applications and accompanying dependents’ passes – the endorsement sticker will still have to be affixed onto the passport for the initial application.
  • New and renewal application of Professional Visit Pass (PVP) Holders.
  • Any change in passports during the renewal process or in a transfer of endorsement process – the ePass is only applicable to foreign nationals renewing their EP and related passes in Malaysia who are still holding the same passport they originally used when applying for their current pass.

Digital pass implementation for renewals in Malaysia is a welcome change as it cuts down the manual process of having to complete the actual endorsement of the pass approval onto a foreign employee’s passport. This would mean that eligible renewal applicants would be able to file and be issued the renewed pass without relinquishing their original passport.

MDEC has yet to release if this will also be introduced for companies registered under them and we are currently monitoring any announcements on this matter. As always, don’t hesitate to reach out to your Newland Chase dedicated contact or submit an inquiry here should you have any specific questions regarding this announcement.
