NEW ZEALAND: Changes to Minimum Income Thresholds for Dependent Sponsorship

May 31, 2019

Effective 1 July 2019, Essential Skills and Religious Worker work visa holders will need to earn at least NZD 43,332.76 to support dependent children for a visitor or student visa (previously NZD 42,944.20).

Also, effective 1 June 2019, Samoan Quota Scheme and Pacific Access Category residence visa applicants will need to earn at least NZD 38,577.76 if they have partners or dependent children (previously NZD 38,199.20).

Immigration New Zealand adjusts minimum income requirements every year to ensure visa holders have enough income to support themselves and their family while in New Zealand.

Note that:

  • Where both parents hold Essential Skills visas, their income can be combined to meet this level.
  • For children of Religious Worker visa holders, the income of both parents can be combined to meet this level.
  • This threshold is different to the skill-band remuneration rates for Essential Skills.
