SAUDI ARABIA: Foreign Nationals Require Registered Rental Agreement for Work Permit Renewal

August 13, 2018

Effective September 2018, foreign national residents looking to renew their work permits must have a rental contract authenticated and registered with the new Ejar online rental platform, according to an announcement by the Saudi Ministry of Labour and Social Development (MLSD) and the Ministry of Housing.

The Ministries intend to extend this requirement to initial work permit applications also at a later date.

The Ejar platform was launched in February 2018.

Our Advice

Once the new system is in place, employers of foreign nationals in Saudi Arabia should ensure their employees’ rental contracts are authenticated and registered with Ejar, to avoid problems with work permit renewals.
