UNITED KINGDOM: Government Extends Period for Temporary COVID-19 Adjusted Right to Work Checks to 1 September 2021

June 18, 2021

The UK government has announced that the adjusted COVID-19 right to work (RTW) provisions will be extended until 1 September 2021.

The government previously advised that this concession would end on 20 June 2021.

From 1 September 2021, employers will revert to face-to-face and physical document checks as set out in legislation and guidance.

The current concessions will mean right to work checks can continue until 1 September 2021 using the below method:

  • Checks can currently be carried out over video calls.
  • Job applicants and existing workers can send scanned documents or a photo of documents for checks using email or a mobile app, rather than sending originals.

Further, even after the concessions end, employers are reminded that they can use the Employer Checking Service or online right to work checking service where the applicant qualifies for these services.
