IVORY COAST: Foreign Nationals Must Apply for New Biometric Residence Cards

Starting 14th August 2017, foreign nationals holding temporary residence cards in Côte d’Ivoire (Ivory Coast) must apply to exchange their old cards for new biometric residence cards. Foreign residents have until 31st December 2017 to complete the switch-over.
In preparation for issuing the new cards, the Office Nationale d’Identification (ONI) in Abidjan temporarily stopped accepting new applications for temporary resident cards from 1st to 14th August. Applicants for new residence cards will now receive the biometric cards.
Background
Côte d’Ivoire has been in the process of transitioning over to a national biometric identification card system for its citizens over the past two years (see our previous alert here).
The move to biometric cards for both citizens and resident foreign nationals in Côte d’Ivoire is part of a larger movement to increase security, combat immigration abuses, and increase mobility.
Our advice
Ensure that temporary residence card holders obtain a new biometric residence card from the ONI before the end of 2017.
