COLOMBIA: Update – New Requirement for Minors Travelling by Air

May 2, 2018

The government of Colombia has postponed until August the recently-announced requirement that anyone travelling by air within or out of Colombia accompanied by a minor child of seven years or under provide a copy of the child’s birth certificate.

The requirement was previously due to take effect on 26th April 2018.

Once the requirement takes effect, those accompanying foreign national minors will have to carry an apostilled or legalised copy of the original birth certificate, while those accompanying Colombian national minors should carry a copy of the birth certificate issued by the notary where the birth was originally registered.

Please note that, regardless of the nationality of the child, if the minor is not travelling with both parents an authorization to travel from each absent parent must be carried.

Our Advice

From August 2018, adults accompanying minor children travelling within or out of Colombia must ensure that they carry the required documents.
