SCHENGEN AREA: Short-stay visa calculation changes
October 29, 2013
From the 18th of October short-stays in the Schengen Area have been clarified for non-EU citizens by changing the calculation for the maximum period from months to days. Short-stay visas can now be utilized for a maximum duration of 90 days out of a 180 day period, rather than the original “periods of six months after the date of very first entry.”
Such a change was intended to avoid confusion concerning the first date of entry when calculating the remaining duration of one”s short-stay available in the Schengen Area. In aid of such clarification, the European Commission has provided a short-stay calculator for easily calculating the days of permitted stay and a user”s guide containing information and instructions as to the new rules and the use of the calculator.
