UK: Immigration Policy Under Review as Figures Hit Record High

With annual net migration to the United Kingdom reaching a record high of 336,000, the UK Government are taking steps to further strengthen immigration policy with a view to reducing migration figures by 2020.

In a recent report by the Office for National Statistics, it has been revealed that more people are arriving in Britain than leaving, with the number of immigrants increasing by 82,000 from the previous year.

The new immigration policy will aim to tackle the issue of illegal migrant workers by imposing new legislation which punishes employers who abuse the system.

The criminalisation of working illegally means that businesses which are not compliant with immigration rules could be closed for a period of up to 48 hours, whilst the employee”s earnings could also be seized if they are deemed to be “proceeds of crime”.

These new rules are being enforced in order to control overall immigration, as well as to protect the opportunities for migrants with the legitimate right to work in the UK.

As well as illegal immigration, there are proposals to review the current Tier 2 visa regulations, which could result in raising the minimum salary thresholds for Tier 2 applicants, and restricting current permited NQF level 6 roles to an expanded shortage occupation list. 

This review of immigration policy is part of a 2011 pledge by Prime Minister David Cameron to bring immigration figures down to a sustainable level.
