Update on London Metropolitan University

January 8, 2013

On Friday the UK Border Agency made an announcement concerning non-EEA students at the London Metropolitan University who have been affected by the revocation of the university”s Tier 4 Sponsor Licence.  The UKBA stated that it would be writing to all the overseas students affected to let them know whether their place at the university has been confirmed.

Background

In October 2012 the UKBA wrote to all affected students at London Metropolitan University to ask them if they wanted to:

  • remain at London Metropolitan University;
  • transfer to a new sponsor; or
  • leave the UK.

Students were asked to respond to the UKBA by the 31st October 2012.  The UK Border Agency agreed to wait before taking action against affected students, to allow for late returns from students and afford them the time to make other study arrangements or leave the UK.

The students” choices have now been assessed and the UKBA has written to confirm whether they have a legitimate reason to remain in the UK.

Genuine students have places confirmed

The UKBA announced that if satisfied you are enrolled at the London Metropolitan University, you will be notified by letter that you can continue your studies to the end of the academic year or the end of your course (whichever is sooner).

If you have applied to transfer to another Tier 4 Sponsor (i.e., another university) and you are still waiting for a decision on your application, you should receive this by the 18th January 2013. While you wait for your decision letter you may continue your studies.

Finally, the UKBA stated that if you did not contact them and have not otherwise obtained leave to remain in another immigration category, they will be writing to you to curtail (shorten) your leave if you have more than 60 days remaining.
